Our Dream Adventure

OUR DREAM ADVENTURE...

In 2014/2015 we are taking some 'Time Out' and planning an adventure trip of a lifetime.

We will start with a six month thru hike of the Appalachian National Scenic Trail or 'AT' for short. A 2186 mile (3500km) trail running along the eastern United States of America.

Next we will be taking a break from daily hiking (there will be some hiking involved though!) and will be going on an amazing three month adventure holiday through South America.

Finally, back to thru hiking again. This time five to six months in New Zealand hiking the Te Araroa - New Zealand's Trail ('TA' for short). A 1865 mile (3000km) trail spanning the whole of New Zealand.

We have set up this Blog so that family, friends and anyone else who is interested, can follow our adventure which will include blogs about our planning and preparation stages as well as our whole amazing trip.

(So not to bore you with too much information, if you wish to read or learn more about what The Appalachian Trail and the Te Araroa Trail are all about see the 'Links' below the three maps in the left hand column.)

Day 34 Zero Day number 3

Today's miles 0.  AT miles 417.

We woke up to a winter wonderland this morning, as forecast it snowed overnight.  We're right by the side of a creek, it looks so pretty in the snow.  It carried on snowing for a bit in the morning then stopped for a few hours but came down heavy again in the afternoon. We got a good 4-5 inches of snow.

We had a very lazy day in the dry amd warm, cozied up on the sofa with a blanket watching dvd's.  Cooked scrambled eggs on toast for breakfast, salad and mini pizza for lunch, philly cheese steak and salad for tea - not a lot of choice from the shop to accompany our salad but at least we're getting a bit of healthy food in us!

It is due to get bitterly cold overnight, down to -12°C/10°F at 3000ft, but forecast a clear sunny day again tomorrow, however still very very cold and not getting above freezing until the afternoon . We'll have to see what the conditions are in the morning, but should be back out hiking.  We have action plans A- E in force!
Plan A, hike 17.5 miles to Vandeventer shelter as originally planned.
Plan B, hike 10.3 miles to Watauga Lake shelter.
Plan C, hike 8.6 miles to US321 road, get a ride into Hampton 2.6 miles away, find accommodation there for the night.
Plan D, hike 2.2 miles plus 1 mile down a side trail into Hampton, find accommodation there for the night.
Plan E, stay put another night!

We had a lovely and very restful, proper rest day and feel totally refreshed.  It helped being in the middle of nowhere and we couldn't go into Hampton again because the steep winding road down to the town was impassible with the snow. The previous two rest days we've had in towns we ended up wandering around the town, so were not as restful.
