Osmotherley to Kildale
Walked 20.5 miles
20 CW Miles + 0.5 extra miles from & to campsites.
We left camp to start walking at 8.15am. It was a tough long day today.
75% of the trail today we walked 2 years ago when we completed the Coast to Coast Walk as the C2C follows the Cleveland Way temporarily, but we had much pleasanter weather this time - cold, wet & misty last time, warm, cloudy with sunny spells & a nice breeze today.
It was a roller coaster of hills today, up and down and up and down! 1050m each of ascent & decent, almost the equivalent of climbing Ben Nevis but with 30lb packs on! We walked up onto Scarthwood Moor, down into Scugdale, up onto Live Moor, along Faceby Bank & Carlton Bank, down to Lord Stones. (There used to be a lovely cafe here, the only possible rest stop on route today, but sadly it is currently closed and undergoing renovation). Up/down Cringle Moor, up/down Broughton Bank, up Hasty Bank down to Clay Bank, up Carr Ridge, up Round Hill, across to Bloworth Crossing where we left the coast to coast section. We then walked over miles & miles of heather moorland over Ingleby, Battersby & Warren Moors. A few practicing fighter jets flew by & also the mountain rescue helicopter doing a training run. Great views all round today and we could see the sea, where we'll be in a couple of days.
We arrived at our campsite, Kildale Camping Barn & campsite at Park Farm about 5.30pm. A fantastic small site, just perfect for walkers with very friendly owners, cat & dog. All the facilities you need with great views looking back on the hills we've walked today. Great price £5 pp + £1 for a half hour shower! Lovely sunny evening sat at a picnic table which makes it so much easier for cooking & eating, we normally sit just on the grass.
We had a yummy supper too, SI (Simon Rimmer) Tomato Biryani. His brand produce dried food sachets that just need water adding & cooking, about £1 a sachet, far cheaper & tastier than specialised dehydrated camping food which costs three or four times as much. Would highly recommend the SI sachets for anyone else needing lightweight backpacking food.
We rate this campsite 3-4*, perfect walkers accommodation for which the farmer has received support from the Northern Uplands Farmers Tourism Initiative.
Only one little down side... We have a lovely field of sheep behind us but today is the day the farmer split the ewes from the lambs! So we have constant bleating & baaing from the ewes behind us and the lambs a couple of fields away! Not complaining though, poor sheep - Don't think they'll keep us awake we're quite tired, Nigel's already fast asleep! Late night for us - 9.30!
Easier & shorter day planned for tomorrow so a lazy start in the morning.
Photos from today:
Lots of lovely purple heather everywhere
The small conical shaped hill in the far distance through the stones is Roseberry Topping where we'll be tomorrow
Down & up & down & up!
The road to nowhere - we're very tired and still no campsite in site!
A view of the Cleveland Hills in the distance that we walked over earlier today
