Today's miles 15. AT miles 635.9
Breakfast at Woods Hole was as good as dinner last night, all home cooked food, scrambled eggs with sausage, peach crisp and yogurt (like a peach crumble), fruit salad, fresh bread and jam. It was really nice but they do serve up strange combinations of savoury and sweet over here on the same plate. After helping clear up after breakfast we then all had a cleaning chore each in the bunk house. Woods Hole main house was lovely, the food was lovely and the owners were lovely but the bunkhouse was very basic and we felt the price charged for all was a little high considering we all had to chip in and help with jobs, a bit like 'work for stay'.
From Woods Hole it was a short climb up onto a ridge line where we had good views in places towards Pearisburg where we were heading for the day. We saw a couple of white tail deer again, they were really close this time so we got a great photo. It was a warmish day again with sunny spells.
It was a ten mile hike to where the trail hit the town outskirts, plus an extra mile to walk into town. We were not planning on staying in the town, just stopping for lunch and for a food resupply then heading back out onto the trail. Originally we had planned on staying the night but there is a large construction project taking place locally and all the hotels are fully booked for the next couple of years apparently so our plans changed. First stop was Dairy Queen (DQ) where we had their great value $5 lunch deal, fries, burger and ice cream, then we headed to Food Lion Supermarket. Then to Hardee's as we thought they would have WiFi but they didn't. We did for once have an AT&T phone signal!
We left town just after five and had about five miles to go to get to our camp spot for the night. It wasn't a very nice five miles. It was very industrial along the side of a busy road and around a power station. The trail was not well maintained and we were hopping over loads of fallen trees and then we had a very steep uphill climb. It was getting late and we thought we'd have to be putting the tent up in the dark. We just made it in time though. Iron Man, Extra Miles and Pillow were already there, Wall E and Milk Monster arrived about ten minutes after us.
Our Dream Adventure
OUR DREAM ADVENTURE...
In 2014/2015 we are taking some 'Time Out' and planning an adventure trip of a lifetime.
We will start with a six month thru hike of the Appalachian National Scenic Trail or 'AT' for short. A 2186 mile (3500km) trail running along the eastern United States of America.
Next we will be taking a break from daily hiking (there will be some hiking involved though!) and will be going on an amazing three month adventure holiday through South America.
Finally, back to thru hiking again. This time five to six months in New Zealand hiking the Te Araroa - New Zealand's Trail ('TA' for short). A 1865 mile (3000km) trail spanning the whole of New Zealand.
We have set up this Blog so that family, friends and anyone else who is interested, can follow our adventure which will include blogs about our planning and preparation stages as well as our whole amazing trip.
(So not to bore you with too much information, if you wish to read or learn more about what The Appalachian Trail and the Te Araroa Trail are all about see the 'Links' below the three maps in the left hand column.)
