Today's miles 14.6. AT miles 669.1
Another really warm sunny day today, temperatures into the 70's. We've been so lucky with the weather on this trip so far. We had a leisurely start and left camp just after half nine this morning. Milk Monster wasn't feeling very well this morning so went back to bed hoping he'd feel better after a few more hours sleep. They were hoping to leave later and still get to the same shelter as the rest of us.
The first four miles this morning were along a rocky path so a bit harder going but then it suddenly changed after a road junction into Mountain Lake Wilderness and got easier. We had a long 2000ft descent today, we met Bullwinkle and Nazcar again half way down and stopped and had a chat with them. The descent was followed straight away by a 1800ft, two and a half mile, one and a half hour ascent. Easy to start with then it got really steep. We've been spoilt the last couple of days with tamer ridge line walks and smaller ups and downs, the long steep ascent was a bit of a shock to the system again and hard work in the afternoon heat.
Once at the top though the path got easier and leveller again before descending down to Laurel Creek Shelter where we're camping tonight, we arrived at 5pm. It was still warm and sunny so it was nice to be able to relax and enjoy it for an hour or so. It was also a good opportunity to air our sleeping bags. Most nights when we get into camp there never seems to be the time or its too cold for extra little jobs. The three guys, Iron Man, Extra Miles and Pillow were at the shelter, they always arrive way before us they're much faster walkers, plus two of the four horsemen and one other guy. Milk Monster and Wall E didn't turn up so we're hoping they are OK and they'll catch us all up tomorrow.
Our Dream Adventure
OUR DREAM ADVENTURE...
In 2014/2015 we are taking some 'Time Out' and planning an adventure trip of a lifetime.
We will start with a six month thru hike of the Appalachian National Scenic Trail or 'AT' for short. A 2186 mile (3500km) trail running along the eastern United States of America.
Next we will be taking a break from daily hiking (there will be some hiking involved though!) and will be going on an amazing three month adventure holiday through South America.
Finally, back to thru hiking again. This time five to six months in New Zealand hiking the Te Araroa - New Zealand's Trail ('TA' for short). A 1865 mile (3000km) trail spanning the whole of New Zealand.
We have set up this Blog so that family, friends and anyone else who is interested, can follow our adventure which will include blogs about our planning and preparation stages as well as our whole amazing trip.
(So not to bore you with too much information, if you wish to read or learn more about what The Appalachian Trail and the Te Araroa Trail are all about see the 'Links' below the three maps in the left hand column.)
