Our Dream Adventure

OUR DREAM ADVENTURE...

In 2014/2015 we are taking some 'Time Out' and planning an adventure trip of a lifetime.

We will start with a six month thru hike of the Appalachian National Scenic Trail or 'AT' for short. A 2186 mile (3500km) trail running along the eastern United States of America.

Next we will be taking a break from daily hiking (there will be some hiking involved though!) and will be going on an amazing three month adventure holiday through South America.

Finally, back to thru hiking again. This time five to six months in New Zealand hiking the Te Araroa - New Zealand's Trail ('TA' for short). A 1865 mile (3000km) trail spanning the whole of New Zealand.

We have set up this Blog so that family, friends and anyone else who is interested, can follow our adventure which will include blogs about our planning and preparation stages as well as our whole amazing trip.

(So not to bore you with too much information, if you wish to read or learn more about what The Appalachian Trail and the Te Araroa Trail are all about see the 'Links' below the three maps in the left hand column.)

Day 82 Zero day No. 8

Today's miles 1.5.   AT miles 1144.6

We took another unplanned rest/zero day today.  Nigel was ill during the night with sickness and diarrhoea. He dosed himself with some Ciprofloxacin.  We're not sure what caused it.  We didn't want to stay at the Doyle Hotel another night, it was too dirty and only had a shared bathroom.  We walked, continuing along the AT which goes straight through the town, to see what a campsite looked like at the other end of town.  We weren't keen it was noisy, right next to the railroad.  The only other accommodation options nearby were a couple of motels two to three miles out of town.

We walked a bit further to a Service/Truck Station then phoned Mary a lady who offers shuttle services locally.  She kindly picked us up and took us to the Red Carpet Inn/Motel.  Much more comfortable than the Doyle.  After a good sleep he was feeling much better, then it was my turn to feel unwell.  I felt slightly nauseous but had more of the chills than sickness, I slept most of the day too.  I could tell Nigel was feeling better as soon as the TV was switched on and he started channel flicking!  Hopefully we'll be back hiking tomorrow.

We still needed some food resupplies.  There was a gas station/convenience store next to the motel so we wandered over there about 6pm.  The guy serving was obviously not used to hikers and couldn't believe we had walked over 1000 miles from Georgia.  He gave us a free tea and coffee.  It was extremely hot outside, 30°C, so we're glad we weren't walking in that today. Unfortunately tomorrow is forecast just as hot but then it is going to cool down again. Lots of possible thunderstorms forecast though too for the next few days.
