Our Dream Adventure

OUR DREAM ADVENTURE...

In 2014/2015 we are taking some 'Time Out' and planning an adventure trip of a lifetime.

We will start with a six month thru hike of the Appalachian National Scenic Trail or 'AT' for short. A 2186 mile (3500km) trail running along the eastern United States of America.

Next we will be taking a break from daily hiking (there will be some hiking involved though!) and will be going on an amazing three month adventure holiday through South America.

Finally, back to thru hiking again. This time five to six months in New Zealand hiking the Te Araroa - New Zealand's Trail ('TA' for short). A 1865 mile (3000km) trail spanning the whole of New Zealand.

We have set up this Blog so that family, friends and anyone else who is interested, can follow our adventure which will include blogs about our planning and preparation stages as well as our whole amazing trip.

(So not to bore you with too much information, if you wish to read or learn more about what The Appalachian Trail and the Te Araroa Trail are all about see the 'Links' below the three maps in the left hand column.)

Day 92 Campsite mile 1311.8 to High Point Shelter

Today's miles 22.2.  AT miles 1334

It was damp and misty this morning after last nights huge thunderstorm.  We were walking for 8:15.  After about an hour we passed Brink Road Shelter where we bumped into Breeze just leaving.  We walked with him for the next three and a half miles to Culvers Gap during which time we had another thunderstorm.  It didn't last too long luckily.  At Culvers Gap the three of us stopped at Joe to Go's for a bacon, egg and cheese roll.  The owner is renowned for being unfriendly to hikers, he was OK with us, we followed his rules - bench for packs and rears!

We left Breeze behind at the Gap he was going for a beer and shower at Stokes park.  It was an uphill climb to Culver Fire tower, great views again.    We called into Green Anderson shelter, Nigel had an appointment with the privy, there was another huge group of school kids there.  New Jersey like bringing their school kids out to the woods.  We left the noisy kids behind and continued to Sunrise Mountain which had a large brick cairn and brick pavilion on top.

The trail was quite undulating and very rocky again today, quite tiring and sore on our feet.  We passed two more shelters, we topped up our water at the first one, there was no spring but large jerry cans of water had been left in the bear box.  It was a warm and very humid day with sunny spells after the mornings thunderstorm.  Another brief thunderstorm passed over us in the afternoon with sunshine straight after which caused an amazing full rainbow.

Just before we reached our shelter/camp spot for the night, High Point shelter, we passed a wooden viewing tower which had great views over towards a monument/tower on top of the highest point in New Jersey.  The trail didn't actually go to the tower, there was a side trail to it but we didn't go, we were tired and it was uphill. We arrived at High Point Shelter at 6:50, quite a late finish for us.  There's just us and Wet Stray Dog, another hiker we met today camping.   We could hear thunder again in the distance in the evening and it started raining just as we were going to sleep at 9pm, hopefully we won't get a repeat of last nights massive thunderstorm.
