Our Dream Adventure

OUR DREAM ADVENTURE...

In 2014/2015 we are taking some 'Time Out' and planning an adventure trip of a lifetime.

We will start with a six month thru hike of the Appalachian National Scenic Trail or 'AT' for short. A 2186 mile (3500km) trail running along the eastern United States of America.

Next we will be taking a break from daily hiking (there will be some hiking involved though!) and will be going on an amazing three month adventure holiday through South America.

Finally, back to thru hiking again. This time five to six months in New Zealand hiking the Te Araroa - New Zealand's Trail ('TA' for short). A 1865 mile (3000km) trail spanning the whole of New Zealand.

We have set up this Blog so that family, friends and anyone else who is interested, can follow our adventure which will include blogs about our planning and preparation stages as well as our whole amazing trip.

(So not to bore you with too much information, if you wish to read or learn more about what The Appalachian Trail and the Te Araroa Trail are all about see the 'Links' below the three maps in the left hand column.)

Day 87 Port Clinton to Allentown Shelter

Today's miles 22.2.  AT miles 1235.9

We were up early and walking for 7:20.  It was a lovely sunny day again but much cooler, a nice walking temperature.  Not long after we started we passed under PA61 road bridge which had some interesting graffiti AT signs.  From there it was uphill, there were quite a few ups and downs today.  The trail wasn't too bad this morning, there were a few rocks but nothing too annoying and for a few miles we were walking down a long track, unusual for the AT.  We passed a few good overlooks, Pulpit Rock, The Pinnacle and Dan's Pulpit, all with fantastic views.

We passed a few section and weekend hikers today, they were quite surprised we were thru hikers saying we were this far up the trail very early, they don't normally see thru hikers until much later.  We explained we left early to beat the crowds.  This weekend is also 'Trail Days' in Damascus, lots of hikers will be delayed there a week, or return to there from the trail to visit the hiking festival.  It's far too far back down the trail for us to go there now.

The second half of the day the trail became much more rocky with some quite big boulders to get over in some places.  After two or three hours of rocks we were getting quite tired of them.  We have to grin and bear them for a few more days yet though.

We arrived at Allentown Hiking Club Shelter at 5:20.  There was a large family group camping, we pitched our tent away from them, their kids were having a great time but very noisy.  We had to put jackets on in the evening for the first time in a while, it cooled down a lot and is forecast overnight to get down to around 7°C, it's not been that cold over night for a few weeks.
