Our Dream Adventure

OUR DREAM ADVENTURE...

In 2014/2015 we are taking some 'Time Out' and planning an adventure trip of a lifetime.

We will start with a six month thru hike of the Appalachian National Scenic Trail or 'AT' for short. A 2186 mile (3500km) trail running along the eastern United States of America.

Next we will be taking a break from daily hiking (there will be some hiking involved though!) and will be going on an amazing three month adventure holiday through South America.

Finally, back to thru hiking again. This time five to six months in New Zealand hiking the Te Araroa - New Zealand's Trail ('TA' for short). A 1865 mile (3000km) trail spanning the whole of New Zealand.

We have set up this Blog so that family, friends and anyone else who is interested, can follow our adventure which will include blogs about our planning and preparation stages as well as our whole amazing trip.

(So not to bore you with too much information, if you wish to read or learn more about what The Appalachian Trail and the Te Araroa Trail are all about see the 'Links' below the three maps in the left hand column.)

Day 149 Long Pond Stream Lean-to to West Branch Pleasant River

Today's miles 15.2.  AT miles 2101.1

The one thing you don't want to do is get sick in the 100 mile wilderness because you are in the middle of nowhere with no help - so what do I do, get sick.  I started feeling ill during the night last night, feeling very nauseous.  By morning I felt no better, still nauseous and had totally lost my appetite. We were awake early planning an early start but I ended up taking some aspirin and having an extra hours sleep hoping for some improvement.  I felt slightly better the aspirin settling my stomach but had no choice we had to carry on hiking.  So feeling rough all day we made our way over The Barrens, a small range of mountains.   We think it must be a reoccurrence of the sickness bug I had in Rangeley and that I've picked up some parasitic 'alien' along the trail somewhere.

We left camp just before 8am.  First up to Barren Ledges which had great views and then continued up to Barren Mountain where there was an old fire tower.  It was then down and up quite a a few times, on some steep rocky ascents and descents in places, through Fourth Mountain Bog where there were conveniently placed stepping stones and boardwalks then over Fourth Mountain, Mount Three and a Half, Third Mountain, Columbus Mountain and Chairback Mountain. We had views from the tops of the White Cap Mountain range where we'll be heading over tomorrow.
We finally descended down to West Branch Pleasant River where there was a lovely little camp site, arriving about 6:15.  All I wanted to do was crawl into bed, I still felt nauseous, had no appetite and was feeling no better.  I had not eaten much all day so Nigel did manage to force a few noodles and tuna down me.
