Our Dream Adventure

OUR DREAM ADVENTURE...

In 2014/2015 we are taking some 'Time Out' and planning an adventure trip of a lifetime.

We will start with a six month thru hike of the Appalachian National Scenic Trail or 'AT' for short. A 2186 mile (3500km) trail running along the eastern United States of America.

Next we will be taking a break from daily hiking (there will be some hiking involved though!) and will be going on an amazing three month adventure holiday through South America.

Finally, back to thru hiking again. This time five to six months in New Zealand hiking the Te Araroa - New Zealand's Trail ('TA' for short). A 1865 mile (3000km) trail spanning the whole of New Zealand.

We have set up this Blog so that family, friends and anyone else who is interested, can follow our adventure which will include blogs about our planning and preparation stages as well as our whole amazing trip.

(So not to bore you with too much information, if you wish to read or learn more about what The Appalachian Trail and the Te Araroa Trail are all about see the 'Links' below the three maps in the left hand column.)

South America Day 20

Today we had a full day trip by local boat from Copacobana harbour to the historic island of Isla del Sol on Lake Titicaca.  The island is famous for being the birthplace of the whole Inca civilisation. The modern day Aymara and Quechua people of Bolivia and Peru still believe the legend of the sun being born on this island as their creation story even today.   There are lots of ancient Inca ruins on the island and our guide, Leonardo took us to visit a few before we had a picnic lunch and then went on a three hour hike along old Inca trails on the island.   The island was beautiful.  It lives up to its name, it was a very sunny day, it rarely rains on the island and the hilly slopes were very dry.  It felt very Mediterranean, similar to a Greek island except it was a 3800m high island in a huge lake and not by the sea.

Towards the end of the hike we passed through tiny traditional villages down to a small port.  There was a local wedding ceremony taking place as we walked by, lots of merry music and dancing.  There are no cars on the island, the only transport being donkeys.  At the port the donkeys were all waiting to be loaded up with goods/supplies to be taken onto the island.
In the evening we all went out for a group meal to a local restaurant, I was hungry, I'd starved myself all day trying to ward off my stomach bug.  The food was a little over priced but great, it was our guide, Leonardo's, mums restaurant.
