Our Dream Adventure

OUR DREAM ADVENTURE...

In 2014/2015 we are taking some 'Time Out' and planning an adventure trip of a lifetime.

We will start with a six month thru hike of the Appalachian National Scenic Trail or 'AT' for short. A 2186 mile (3500km) trail running along the eastern United States of America.

Next we will be taking a break from daily hiking (there will be some hiking involved though!) and will be going on an amazing three month adventure holiday through South America.

Finally, back to thru hiking again. This time five to six months in New Zealand hiking the Te Araroa - New Zealand's Trail ('TA' for short). A 1865 mile (3000km) trail spanning the whole of New Zealand.

We have set up this Blog so that family, friends and anyone else who is interested, can follow our adventure which will include blogs about our planning and preparation stages as well as our whole amazing trip.

(So not to bore you with too much information, if you wish to read or learn more about what The Appalachian Trail and the Te Araroa Trail are all about see the 'Links' below the three maps in the left hand column.)

South America Day 23 & 24

Day 23 - we had another free day in La Paz so after breakfast spent most of the day wandering around the city again.  We found a few new streets to explore and local bustling specialised market areas - shoes and clothes markets, food markets, party/fancy dress markets.  Nigel had a second (Mini English) breakfast at Olivers Tavern late morning then early afternoon we had a cake shop/cafe stop.   In the evening we had a delicious pizza at a Lonely Planet recommended restaurant a few doors from our hotel, Martinni Pizza.  Their tables were quirky, decorated with 'thank you' napkins.  Then we packed our bags and had an early night as we had a 5:30am start again the next day.

Day 24 - A long drive day, 500km, from La Paz to Potosi.  We were on the road for 7am and crossed a huge flat Altiplano for much of the journey. We stopped on route in Oruro for lunch then hit more mountainous terrain late afternoon.  We arrived at our hotel, Hotel Jerusalem, in Potosi about 6:30pm.  Potosi was a once wealthy silver mining city, the largest and wealthiest city of the Americas at one time.   Once the silver dried up the city went into decline and poverty, it now mines tin.  In the evening we went for a lovely meal to '4,060  restaurant' with Ken, Haydee, Tony and Sadie.
