Our Dream Adventure

OUR DREAM ADVENTURE...

In 2014/2015 we are taking some 'Time Out' and planning an adventure trip of a lifetime.

We will start with a six month thru hike of the Appalachian National Scenic Trail or 'AT' for short. A 2186 mile (3500km) trail running along the eastern United States of America.

Next we will be taking a break from daily hiking (there will be some hiking involved though!) and will be going on an amazing three month adventure holiday through South America.

Finally, back to thru hiking again. This time five to six months in New Zealand hiking the Te Araroa - New Zealand's Trail ('TA' for short). A 1865 mile (3000km) trail spanning the whole of New Zealand.

We have set up this Blog so that family, friends and anyone else who is interested, can follow our adventure which will include blogs about our planning and preparation stages as well as our whole amazing trip.

(So not to bore you with too much information, if you wish to read or learn more about what The Appalachian Trail and the Te Araroa Trail are all about see the 'Links' below the three maps in the left hand column.)

BA to RIO Days 2 & 3

Day 2:  We left Buenos Aires this morning and caught a ferry across the Rio de La Plata leaving Argentina to Colonia Del Sacramento, Uruguay.  The colonial city of Colonia del Sacramento is the oldest town in Uruguay and named a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.   The old part of the town jutting out on a peninsula had lots of old cobble stoned streets, old buildings (some sadly left to fall into disrepair) and old cars.   The area was very pretty with lots of Bougainvillea blossoming.  It was a warm sunny day at last!  Warm enough for t-shirts and to enjoy eating at an outdoor restaurant table for a late lunch.

Day 3: we left Colonia del Sacramento on the 10:30 public bus to Montevideo, the capital of Uruguay arriving in time for a late lunch. Fernanda gave us an orientation tour of the new and the old part of the city.  We finished the tour at the 1868 Mercado del Puerto (indoor port food market), a large wrought iron structure next to the harbour it was once the local place all harbour workers came to eat.  Still serving food, it is now full of lots of different restaurants.  We stayed for a late lunch in one of the restaurants and shared a lovely paella.  Afterwards we continued wandering around the city, it was again a lovely warm day today.
