Our Dream Adventure

OUR DREAM ADVENTURE...

In 2014/2015 we are taking some 'Time Out' and planning an adventure trip of a lifetime.

We will start with a six month thru hike of the Appalachian National Scenic Trail or 'AT' for short. A 2186 mile (3500km) trail running along the eastern United States of America.

Next we will be taking a break from daily hiking (there will be some hiking involved though!) and will be going on an amazing three month adventure holiday through South America.

Finally, back to thru hiking again. This time five to six months in New Zealand hiking the Te Araroa - New Zealand's Trail ('TA' for short). A 1865 mile (3000km) trail spanning the whole of New Zealand.

We have set up this Blog so that family, friends and anyone else who is interested, can follow our adventure which will include blogs about our planning and preparation stages as well as our whole amazing trip.

(So not to bore you with too much information, if you wish to read or learn more about what The Appalachian Trail and the Te Araroa Trail are all about see the 'Links' below the three maps in the left hand column.)

Ushuaia - Glacier Martial

Last night our B&B owner, Raul, entertained his guests playing Argentine tango music on his accordion.  He also explained a bit about the history of the tango , in Spanish though so we couldn't understand it.  We did recognise a lot of the tunes he played though.  He was very passionate about the music and a very talented accordionist.

Today we walked from our B&B up to Glacier Martial, a pleasant 7km walk oneway, half on road, half tracks.  The weather was warmer, about 9°C with sunny spells, a complete contrast to the last two very cold snowy days.  All the snow had melted in the town but there was still plenty in the mountains.  At the road end near the glacier there was a lovely Tea Shop, very pretty and very English, so we called in for tea and cake first.  We then had about another kilometre to walk up to view the glacier from a viewpoint.  We couldn't actually see the glacier itself because it was covered in snow, it just blended in with the rest of the snowy mountain, but we could see people skiing/snowboarding down it.  A lovely clear day we had fantastic views back over Ushuaia Bay, The Beagle Channel and Chile on our return walk.

Today was our last day in Ushuaia so in the evening we met up with our Dragoman crew, Vikki, Eoin and Oli, and Aussie Katie who where all still in town for a final meal together.  We met just after 7pm and got a taxi out to a lovely restaurant on the seafront with great views only to find they were fully booked.  They could have squeezed us in, the restaurant was actually empty when we arrived, but they weren't starting serving food until 9pm, Argentinians eat very late.  As we'd made the effort to get there in taxi's they did allow us to stay for one drink then called us taxi's to get back into town.  We ended up at the Irish Bar and ate there, where we had originally planned on meeting but it was shut when we met at 7pm.  Nigel ended up with some very strange green coloured Dublin Beagle beer. We had a great evening, it was lovely to see everyone for one last time.
