Our Dream Adventure

OUR DREAM ADVENTURE...

In 2014/2015 we are taking some 'Time Out' and planning an adventure trip of a lifetime.

We will start with a six month thru hike of the Appalachian National Scenic Trail or 'AT' for short. A 2186 mile (3500km) trail running along the eastern United States of America.

Next we will be taking a break from daily hiking (there will be some hiking involved though!) and will be going on an amazing three month adventure holiday through South America.

Finally, back to thru hiking again. This time five to six months in New Zealand hiking the Te Araroa - New Zealand's Trail ('TA' for short). A 1865 mile (3000km) trail spanning the whole of New Zealand.

We have set up this Blog so that family, friends and anyone else who is interested, can follow our adventure which will include blogs about our planning and preparation stages as well as our whole amazing trip.

(So not to bore you with too much information, if you wish to read or learn more about what The Appalachian Trail and the Te Araroa Trail are all about see the 'Links' below the three maps in the left hand column.)

Buenos Aries/BA to RIO Day 1

We caught a 9am flight from Ushuaia to Buenos Aries arriving in BA at 12:30.  Here we start the final leg of our South American adventure joining another trip tomorrow with Intrepid Travel where we will travel from Buenos Aires up to Rio de Janeiro over 17 days.  It was raining when we arrived and continued raining heavily all day.  The city was deserted, we assume because of the rain and it also being a Sunday.  About 4pm we were hungry so ventured out and managed to find a restaurant not too far from our hotel, we got a bit wet getting there though.  We had a lovely meal then returned to our hotel, once again in the rain.
We would have liked to go and see some street side donation tango shows and an a big street market in the evening at Plaza Dorerego, about a mile walk from where we're staying, but doubt anything much was happening in the heavy rain.
Our second day in Buenos Aires and it was still raining heavily when we woke up, they had 40 hours none stop rain so lots of localised flooding. It stopped raining luckily just in time for us to join an orientation walk of Buenos Aires with our new group leader at 1pm.  Fernanda, our guide, gave us a quick one hour tour of the central area, lits of European influence in the buildings, then we wandered off on our own down to the riverside, it seemed very similar to London in a way.  Then back via plaza Dorerego area with its older buildings and cobbled streets.
We had our official trip meet at 6pm, there are 16 of us, we're the only couple this time.   After the meeting we all went to a steak house for dinner and to start getting to know each other.  Next to the restaurant was a book shop, we had a quick look inside. It was once a theatre and is said to be one of the most beautiful book shops in the world, it was impressive.
