Our Dream Adventure

OUR DREAM ADVENTURE...

In 2014/2015 we are taking some 'Time Out' and planning an adventure trip of a lifetime.

We will start with a six month thru hike of the Appalachian National Scenic Trail or 'AT' for short. A 2186 mile (3500km) trail running along the eastern United States of America.

Next we will be taking a break from daily hiking (there will be some hiking involved though!) and will be going on an amazing three month adventure holiday through South America.

Finally, back to thru hiking again. This time five to six months in New Zealand hiking the Te Araroa - New Zealand's Trail ('TA' for short). A 1865 mile (3000km) trail spanning the whole of New Zealand.

We have set up this Blog so that family, friends and anyone else who is interested, can follow our adventure which will include blogs about our planning and preparation stages as well as our whole amazing trip.

(So not to bore you with too much information, if you wish to read or learn more about what The Appalachian Trail and the Te Araroa Trail are all about see the 'Links' below the three maps in the left hand column.)

South America Days 63 - 64

Day 63: The final full day of our 64 day overland trip with Dragoman and a free day in Ushuaia so everyone did their own thing during the day then we all met up for a farewell meal in the evening.  Arriving a day early we now have six days in Ushuaia so we just had an very leisurely day wandering around the town, in no rush to do everything.  (Most of the morning was a bit of a goose chase trying to withdraw some Western Union money we'd sent to ourselves due to poor ATM service in El Calafate and Argentina in general!).  We had a lovely 'all you can eat' meal in the evening at La Estancia restaurant with the whole group.

Day 64:  our trip officially ended at breakfast this morning so we were saying our goodbyes to people, some the night before.  We moved accommodation from the hostel, Los Cormoranes which was very nice, to a B&B, Tango B&B, also very nice just around the corner.  It was much colder today, a cold wind, it even tried to snow.  We visited the Valeria Tematica (themed gallery) museum in the afternoon, a very interesting place with audio guide depicting the 'Land of Fire' history. It started with scenes and stories of three different native settlers, the Shelknam, the Haush and the Yamanas. Then we had the history of the HMS Beagle and British explorer Robert Fitzroy and a young Darwin and the Scottish Antarctic explorer Ernest Shackleton.  There were also scenes of the local penitentiary history (we will visit the proper prison museum another day).
