Our Dream Adventure

OUR DREAM ADVENTURE...

In 2014/2015 we are taking some 'Time Out' and planning an adventure trip of a lifetime.

We will start with a six month thru hike of the Appalachian National Scenic Trail or 'AT' for short. A 2186 mile (3500km) trail running along the eastern United States of America.

Next we will be taking a break from daily hiking (there will be some hiking involved though!) and will be going on an amazing three month adventure holiday through South America.

Finally, back to thru hiking again. This time five to six months in New Zealand hiking the Te Araroa - New Zealand's Trail ('TA' for short). A 1865 mile (3000km) trail spanning the whole of New Zealand.

We have set up this Blog so that family, friends and anyone else who is interested, can follow our adventure which will include blogs about our planning and preparation stages as well as our whole amazing trip.

(So not to bore you with too much information, if you wish to read or learn more about what The Appalachian Trail and the Te Araroa Trail are all about see the 'Links' below the three maps in the left hand column.)

Day 100 Ten Mile River shelter to Kent

Today's miles 8.7.  AT miles 1463.2

Wow our 100th day on the trail, only another 50 to go if we achieve our five month completion goal.  We passed the two thirds way mark on the trail today also.  A short half day walking today, we needed a bit of a rest so we stopped off in Kent.  The trail went over Ten Mile River first thing this morning then ascended about 900 feet.  It then consisted of the usual small ups and downs with a fair few rocky sections, ending with a steepish descent down to the road to Kent.

We walked the 0.8 miles along the road into Kent, a very picturesque yuppie town with a very posh boarding school. Although it did seem hiker friendly, we felt a bit out of place among all the well dressed locals having lunch in the street cafes/taverns.  We stopped at the Outfitters/Annie Bananies for an ice cream where we bumped into Heinz and Salt and their dog again.  From there we walked along Main Street which had lots of fancy shops and cafes to the Davis IGA supermarket to get our food resupply - nice supermarket, expensive though.  Normally we'd check in to our accommodation and shower before shopping but weren't able to on this occasion so felt very sorry for the people who came in close contact with us.

At 3:15 we got picked up by the son of the Hitching Post Motel's owner.  There were no affordable accommodation vacancies in Kent so we arranged to stay in Cornwall Bridge instead at the motel. They do charge for shuttles but it still worked out cheaper for us than accommodation in Kent.  Very friendly owners, Mrs Patel carried our shopping bags to our room for us and let us settle in before having to register and pay.  Although a small fee was charged we had use of their washing machine and dryer to do our laundry.  There was nowhere near the motel to get food which we were warned about when we booked, so we bought food from the supermarket to eat in our room.
