Our Dream Adventure

OUR DREAM ADVENTURE...

In 2014/2015 we are taking some 'Time Out' and planning an adventure trip of a lifetime.

We will start with a six month thru hike of the Appalachian National Scenic Trail or 'AT' for short. A 2186 mile (3500km) trail running along the eastern United States of America.

Next we will be taking a break from daily hiking (there will be some hiking involved though!) and will be going on an amazing three month adventure holiday through South America.

Finally, back to thru hiking again. This time five to six months in New Zealand hiking the Te Araroa - New Zealand's Trail ('TA' for short). A 1865 mile (3000km) trail spanning the whole of New Zealand.

We have set up this Blog so that family, friends and anyone else who is interested, can follow our adventure which will include blogs about our planning and preparation stages as well as our whole amazing trip.

(So not to bore you with too much information, if you wish to read or learn more about what The Appalachian Trail and the Te Araroa Trail are all about see the 'Links' below the three maps in the left hand column.)

Day 98 Stealth camp mile 1411 to Morgan Stewart Shelter

Today's miles 22.9.  AT miles 1433.9

It was a long tiring day today, we had some miles to make up from yesterday.  The weather though was a lot cooler thankfully, a much nicer walking temperature. We had a small rain shower in the morning then it remained dry and overcast for the rest of the day.   We set off at 8am which seems to becoming a regular start time for us.

It was a pretty uneventful day, the trail scenery and terrain didn't change much, it was a mix of smooth and rocky path sections through the forest with lots of ups and downs over small mountain tops thrown in.  It was one of those monotonous days where time dragged, at least for me anyway, Nigel was happy but admitted it was a long dull day. You reach twelve midday having walked four hours already, realising you still have another six hours of walking to do. You're then counting down the hours the rest of the day, it goes quicker eventually but the last mile to the shelter/campsite always seems to last forever.  Today's last mile was a rocky ascent over the highest point of the day.  Luckily we don't have many days like today.

There was some nice graffiti on top of Shenandoah Mountain, a painted 911 Memorial flag.  No baby caterpillars or bugs today but a few baby orange salamanders and lots of frogs on the trail.  The frogs migrate over mountains apparently, that's a big journey for a little frog.

We arrived at the Morgan Stewart shelter at 6pm, Wet Scary Dog was already there.  It was a much cooler evening, we had to wear jackets for the first time in a few weeks and get tucked in our sleeping bags to keep warm.  A bit of a contrast from yesterday evening when we sat just in our underwear because it was too hot.
