Our Dream Adventure

OUR DREAM ADVENTURE...

In 2014/2015 we are taking some 'Time Out' and planning an adventure trip of a lifetime.

We will start with a six month thru hike of the Appalachian National Scenic Trail or 'AT' for short. A 2186 mile (3500km) trail running along the eastern United States of America.

Next we will be taking a break from daily hiking (there will be some hiking involved though!) and will be going on an amazing three month adventure holiday through South America.

Finally, back to thru hiking again. This time five to six months in New Zealand hiking the Te Araroa - New Zealand's Trail ('TA' for short). A 1865 mile (3000km) trail spanning the whole of New Zealand.

We have set up this Blog so that family, friends and anyone else who is interested, can follow our adventure which will include blogs about our planning and preparation stages as well as our whole amazing trip.

(So not to bore you with too much information, if you wish to read or learn more about what The Appalachian Trail and the Te Araroa Trail are all about see the 'Links' below the three maps in the left hand column.)

Day 105 Mt Wilcox South Shelter to Lee

Today's miles 17.4.  AT miles 1546.2

It continued raining most of the night last night but had stopped by early morning.    It was another warm sunny day but much fresher and less humid, last nights thunderstorms clearing the air.  We were packed away and walking for 7:45am.  The trail continued uphill over Mount Wilcox (2136ft) passing its North shelter after a couple of miles, then descended all the way down again to 900ft.  The paths were mainly pretty good today, just a few short rockier sections.

We continued on the up and down theme the rest of the day.  It was quite warm again but with a nice breeze and cooler in the shady pine forests.  We had intended on making up our lost miles from yesterday and walking a 24 mile day but about 4pm the trail passed Berkshire Lakeside Lodge. We were quite tired and it looked a really nice place to stop, so we did.  There were a few other hikers staying too it being just 0.1 miles from the trail.

We got settled in and showered then ordered Chinese, our first Chinese since hitting the trail.  We seem to have managed to miss all the AYCE (all you can eat) Chinese buffet joints in towns - most hikers favourite dining establishments.  During the evening we had a knock on the door, it was Milky, another English guy, a retired milkman from Kendal, hiking the trail.  We'd heard he was on the trail behind us but had not met him until now, he'd caught us up.  A nice guy, we had a good chat for quite a while.
