Our Dream Adventure

OUR DREAM ADVENTURE...

In 2014/2015 we are taking some 'Time Out' and planning an adventure trip of a lifetime.

We will start with a six month thru hike of the Appalachian National Scenic Trail or 'AT' for short. A 2186 mile (3500km) trail running along the eastern United States of America.

Next we will be taking a break from daily hiking (there will be some hiking involved though!) and will be going on an amazing three month adventure holiday through South America.

Finally, back to thru hiking again. This time five to six months in New Zealand hiking the Te Araroa - New Zealand's Trail ('TA' for short). A 1865 mile (3000km) trail spanning the whole of New Zealand.

We have set up this Blog so that family, friends and anyone else who is interested, can follow our adventure which will include blogs about our planning and preparation stages as well as our whole amazing trip.

(So not to bore you with too much information, if you wish to read or learn more about what The Appalachian Trail and the Te Araroa Trail are all about see the 'Links' below the three maps in the left hand column.)

Day 113 Spruce Peak shelter to Big branch shelter

Today's miles 19.3. AT miles 1663.7

It had stopped raining by the morning but remained a damp misty cool day all day.  Downhill to start then a steady uphill to Bromley Mountain.  The final ascent to the summit took us up a ski run, there were dormant gondolas on the summit.  Down again then up to Styles Peak and then Peru Peak.  Then down again.  All the descents from the mountain summits were quite steep initially today.

We passed another lovely lake, Griffith Lake, there was a lot of board walking over swampy ground in that area.  We continued downhill heading to Lost Pond Shelter where we had originally planned on stopping for the night.  There was one small last peak thrown in on the way, Baker Peak.  To get to the peak though was a climb up a steep rocky ledge, luckily it wasn't too wet and slippy.  It was just after 4:30pm when we arrived at Lost Pond shelter and it was only another 1.7 miles to the next shelter so we continued a bit further to Big Branch Shelter arriving just before 5:30.  There were no camping spots so we are sleeping in the shelter but with our tent inner up to keep the bugs out.  The shelter is right next to the Big Branch river so there were a few mosquitoes around.

Hawk arrived not long after us. Hawk had been into town, Manchester Centre, and bought a couple of small red wine cartons which he shared with Nigel.  Nigel was very happy. About 6 o'clock it started raining.  Luckily the rain held off all day whilst we were hiking.  I'm not sure how long it rained for into the night, the sound of the river drowned out the sound of the rain.
